Review// American Panda by Gloria Chao

At seventeen, Mei should be in high school, but skipping fourth grade was part of her parents’ master plan. Now a freshman at MIT, she is on track to fulfill the rest of this predetermined future: become a doctor, marry a preapproved Taiwanese Ivy Leaguer, produce a litter of babies. With everything her parents have sacrificed to make her cushy life a reality, Mei can’t bring herself to tell them the truth–that she (1) hates germs, (2) falls asleep in biology lectures, and (3) has a crush on her classmate Darren Takahashi, who is decidedly not Taiwanese. But when Mei reconnects with her brother, Xing, who is estranged from the family for dating the wrong woman, Mei starts to wonder if all the secrets are truly worth it. Can she find a way to be herself, whoever that is, before her web of lies unravels? This review contains no spoilers. This book was bought with my own money. Trigger warnings//…

#lwchallenge// February 2019 “meet cute”

Welcome to the Little Writing Challenge of February 2019! Please make sure you’ve read my blog post called Little Writing Challenge before reading this one for all the rules and how to submit your story. Meet cute Because it’s Valentine’s Day the 14th, I decided to make this month’s challenge a cute one. The Little Writing Challenge for February 2019 is “meet cute”. I thought that was very fitting, since this is the first Little Writing Challenge and that’s also kind of like meeting for the first time. And while the internet says a meet cute has to result into a romantic relationship, I don’t agree. A meet cute friendship is 100% legit in my opinion. So even if you’re not into writing romance you could make this challenge work, because I appreciate original takes on it. You can write just about the meet cute, or what comes after it as well. That’s up to you. Just make sure your…

2019// Bye January, Hello February

January was a month that seemed to take forever. I almost can’t believe it’s only been 31 days. I started of January with a reread of Everless. It didn’t take me long to finish it and I finished reading Six of Crows not long after. Then I decided to read Two Dark Reigns, and if you follow me on Twitter you might already know this, but it took me forever to read. I only just finished it, not even two hours before this is being posted. I had really hoped I had been able to read more. I am really happy with the amount of blog posts I have written this month and the way my blog looks at the moment. I am also starting to slowly find my place in the blogging community and my blog has grown quite a bit this month as well! I have been blogging/bookstagramming since 2015 (!!) and only recently I have discovered people…

Little Writing Challenge

A few days ago while I was trying to fall asleep, a new idea popped up in my head. I wrote it down and fell asleep. The next day I was still excited about the idea, namely starting a monthly writing challenge. Years back I hosted a writing contest on Wattpad and I really enjoyed doing that, but I don’t want to critique the writings of those that participate anymore, so that’s why I chose for a challenge instead. This challenge is a great way to start writing more, to warm up for writing your novel, or to get to know your own characters better in a different setting, without taking up too much of your time. I hope you are as excited as I am! Little Writing Challenge // The Little Writing Challenge is a reoccurring monthly challenge that starts on the first of every month and ends on the 25th. // Write around a 1000 words. This is…

Evermore pre-order campaign

Before I officially start this blog post; do you call this stuff ‘swag’? I have zero idea. The word kind of sounds weird to me in this context, but I believe I have seen it multiple times, so… Or maybe goodies? Google isn’t helping me, ahhhh. (Just when I thought my English was on quite a level, this happens, haha.) On November 3 I posted a picture of Everless on my Bookstagram and Sara Holland commented on it. She was happy I liked Everless and she brought to my attention there was a pre-order campaign for Evermore. I clicked on the link in her bio and was like ‘I need this!’. The thing was, I had the Dutch edition of Everless and I wanted Evermore to match. So I tagged the Dutch publisher Blossom Books, mentioning I’d love them to organize a pre-order campaign as well. And they did! (No idea if it was because of me, haha.) I got…

Review// Caraval by Stephanie Garber (Caraval #1)

Remember, it’s only a game… Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over. But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner. Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic. And whether Caraval is real or not, Scarlett must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over or a dangerous domino effect…

Level 20

Twenty years ago on this day, I was born. Or, to put it in a modern way, I have levelled up to level 20, haha. My teenager years are now over and that means today is kind of the start of a new chapter in my life. (I do not feel like I’m 20 years old, by the way. Hahahahaha, me? 20? lol) I wish everyone would receive an overview of their life up until that point on their birthday. I would love to see how many books in total I have read, how many words I have written, what my most used words are, and I’d also like to know in how many tourists their pictures I accidentally am. That would be funny, I am sure the numbers would surprise me. It feels like last year went by pretty fast, like I have been 19 for only a few months, not a whole year. I decided to look back…

Review// Everless by Sara Holland (Everless #1)

In the kingdom of Sempera, time is currency—extracted from blood, bound to iron, and consumed to add time to one’s own lifespan. The rich aristocracy, like the Gerlings, tax the poor to the hilt, extending their own lives by centuries. No one resents the Gerlings more than Jules Ember. A decade ago, she and her father were servants at Everless, the Gerlings’ palatial estate, until a fateful accident forced them to flee in the dead of night. When Jules discovers that her father is dying, she knows that she must return to Everless to earn more time for him before she loses him forever. But going back to Everless brings more danger—and temptation—than Jules could have ever imagined. Soon she’s caught in a tangle of violent secrets and finds her heart torn between two people she thought she’d never see again. Her decisions have the power to change her fate—and the fate of time itself. This review contains no…

Bookstagrammers and their fake coffee

Today I want to talk about something funny in the Bookstagram community. I think it’s something most people who are not very invested in Bookstagram or not at all don’t know about: Bookstagrammers and their fake coffee. First of all, there are many Bookstagrammers who use real coffee in their pictures and *GASP* they also drink it. But I know there are quite some people who use fake coffee, including me. Let’s get to it! There are different ways to make fake coffee. A few of them are editing water, water + soy sauce, cola, editing tea, mixing leftover coffee with water or editing in whipped cream. None of the cups in the picture above contain 100% coffee and 2 of them were empty cups. Don’t believe me? Here’s the original picture: Using tea is great if you just don’t drink coffee, but you do like the look of coffee in pictures. Coffee is darker than tea, and sometimes that…
